the LUNAR new year

i totally drank the asian american awarness kool aid.

am i incorrect saying that this is the LUNAR new year? it is P.C. to say it's the lunar new year because it's not just the chinese who celebrate the year that is determined by the lunar calendar. vietnamese, korean, japanese, thai, and other ethnic groups celebrate the lunar new year too. in fact, the vietnamese zodiac is different from the chinese one so it would be more accurate to call Tet the lunar new year.

it's funny how i came about calling tet the lunar new year. growing up, my parents and i would talk about tet and one day when i was a little girl, i talked about the "chinese new year" in english and my parents put it to a stop right there. they said to me, "we are not chinese. we call tet, tet. it's not the chinese new year. it's tet and that's what everyone should call it." that's how i came about to call it the lunar new year -- it was my compromise of calling it something that is more pc and doesn't require a translation.

well actually it does require a translation. when i talk to those who aren't in tune with asian cultures and i refer to the lunar new year, they really didn't know what i was talking about.

it really is an american culture thing i think. it's been known for so long as the chinese new year because the chinese are the asian majority in the states (well i suppose in all the world if you want to look at it that way) and they were also the first to introduce the lunar new year at a large scale to the western world. naturally, the lunar new year would be associated with the chinese culture. and of course it would make sense for those of you who are of chinese heritage to call it the chinese new year. go figure.

so as long as i implant my seed with at least one person a year, i think i've done my part in bringing awareness to the diversity of an aspect of asian cultures that share a common bond.

but in the end, it's all about family and food no matter what you call it. i ate so much this past weekend. OHHH WEEEEE!!! what a great weekend. hope you all brought in the new year fantastically like i did too!!!

blast from the past - i attended my sister's h.s. district swim meet today and realized how i am still connected to the swimming community. total blast from the past. saw folks that i have known longer than most of my friends. also spoke to my coach and he asked me if i was still in college, a senior maybe? no, coach. been out of school for a while now.

i feel old but clearly i don't look it. i went to cvs today and the pharmacist asked me if i was chinese and if i was still in high school.

yes.

no wonder i get carded everywhere i go!

raise your hand if you have left a checked bag on the airport carousel.
please don't let me be the only one.

whenever i make the usual trip back home, i have my 1 checked 21" rolling luggage and carry on my laptop bag and purse. well yesterday, i decide to check an extra bag with my winter clothes. i arrive in bakersfield pretty tired at 11pm, pick up my 21" checked bag and head straight for my car just thinking about jumping right into bed. i end up going to the grocery store, watch tv and talk on the phone. i don't realize that i am missing a bag until i'm about to hop in the shower thinking, "now where is my face wash?" then realizing it's in the 2nd bag!

i rush out to the airport at midnight and you would THINK there would be at least a security guard at an AIRPORT for goodness sakes. nope. not a single soul was at the bakersfield meadows field airport.

so don't worry everybody. i just called some folks at 5 am and my bag is safe and sound. woo hoo!

my time for the last 5 months have been at the office, in transit, in LA, or in houston. how is everyone doing???

once upon a time there was this girl named kristine and she moved out to the desert to work in the middle of a producing oil field. she sees this beautiful sight every morning from her modular work unit in the middle of the parking lot. this is a view from her office. she kids you not.

on her weekends she likes make a short trip to LA where she can grab a bite to eat in little ethiopia. yum!

or perhaps even some tasty korean bbq that is made in a restaurant that is as big as walmart.

if she's not eating one type of ethnic food, it's another. if just food isn't enough to go out to dine, we must have entertainment.... enter MORROCCAN FOOD!

(ok enough 3rd person) sometimes i hop on an express jet to houston where eric and donald made their birthday wishes.

i think i know what eric wished for because it came true in like 2 minutes!

BELLYDANCER!

liuy is thrilled to have hips shaking his way. donald abstained because he did not want to be beat by chrissy when they got back to the house.

richard was not scared by me when he received a dance from the bellydancer.

little did he know that he was going to get the cold scare from myself and babariAN.

that's pretty gangstar but look at these fools. they are the OGs i haven't seen in ages!

and THESE guys too. seriously. i had to go to the opposite side of the continent (and richard 1/2 way) just to eat dinner and have a drink with them.

i travel 1/2 way across the continent to have a meal and drink with this guy anytime. richard has been my boo for nearly 6 years now! i miss him.

and i miss my family. i'm not going to put up a picture of me and my sister because she is too beautiful and you xanga pervs will drool all over her.

the twins never fail to crack me up.

i'm so screwed when i have babies. they are going to basically get whatever they want by looking at me like this.

ok i spend way too much time on the computer. so much that i the ergonomic cop was shocked at me having over 29,000 keystrokes in one day. he says i am one of the 5 or 6 out of 2000+ evaluations he's completed. enter the AIM generation.....

it's been a long time, huh guys?

my blogging is pretty much limited because

my personal laptop overheated which leads to....
i'm limited to my company laptop
company firewall blocks xanga because it's a "dating" site

the past few months have gone by CRAZY fast.

my brother graduated from CLHS AND is going to be a COLLEGE student in less than a month. i'm so proud. omg i'm so old.

my cousins are getting BIG. especially this little big momma.

my friend, an, is getting big too. she's raising the roof to bring in another year in life. can i get a hoo-ah!

ups to justin on catching a frisbee with his mouth.

and this a reason why i prefer houston over bakersfield.

speaking of bakersfield, i don't know what to say when folks ask me, "so how do you like it?" so far, this is what i can't hang with:

there's only 2 places that offer pho. 1 place threw me off because the menu was completely in english. i mean wtf, how am i supposed to know what "rice noodles with rare slices of beef" is? the other place is in the ghetto i've been told not to go over there after sunset.
it has the worst air quality in the entire USA. all of the crap from LA and nor-cal just hovers over my current area of residence. after i go for a bike ride, i feel like i'm about to cough up a lung.
you have to watch out of valley fever. don't go outside for a long period of time if the wind is blowing hard.
the weather as seen above. my skin is so freaking dry because i'm used to the houston 100% humidity providing contant moisturization 24/7.
there's no CVS!
the last name "VU" is "different". i was told that once at the hertz counter at the bakersfield airport and the girl asked me how to pronounce my last name. (she also asked me to spell "chevron".) the 2nd time was when i called the doctor and she was so confused when i spelled my 2-letter last name. she was like "huh? V-U-O?"

BUT! i can't complain about the 20 minute commute to work WITH traffic! everything is like 10 minutes from my house.
